Waldspirale
📍 Hesse, Darmstadt
A Hundertwasser apartment block in Darmstadt with no straight lines, over a thousand differently shaped windows, trees sprouting from balconies and a grass-covered roof — the last building he finished before his death in 2000.
Drive south of Frankfurt for a moment and you find Darmstadt’s Waldspirale (“forest spiral”), a U-shaped residential complex of 105 apartments designed by the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and completed in 2000. It is the last building he saw finished; he died aboard the Queen Mary 2 in 2000 while travelling to see it.
Why It’s Interesting
Hundertwasser rejected straight lines, and it shows: the façade doesn’t follow a grid, there are more than 1,000 windows, no two the same, and “tree tenants” grow from windows and balconies. The roof is a planted green roof, and the inner courtyard has a playground and a small artificial lake.
Best Time to Visit
Any time. Spring and summer, when the planting is in leaf, look best. The rooftop restaurants and bars that once let the public up no longer operate, so plan on admiring it from outside.
Getting There
At Bad Nauheimer Straße 2, 64289 Darmstadt. It is roughly a 40-minute detour from the A5 on the way between Heilbronn and Frankfurt — a good stretch-your-legs stop rather than a destination for hours.

Field report
A traveler wrote to me with a road trip from Abstatt to Frankfurt and a request for something weird that wasn't a museum, and this was the first thing I found on the map: an apartment block shaped like a horseshoe that someone forgot to straighten. Friedensreich Hundertwasser hated straight lines, so there are none, and the windows all dance out of step, and some have trees growing out of them like the building couldn't decide where the forest ended.
I circled it twice at squirrel height, checking each tree tenant for a hollow. The grass roof is the whole reason I wanted to come, and I understand from the humans nearby that it is strictly for the people who live there, so I looked at it very respectfully from the pavement.
Visitors keep saying to walk the whole curve slowly, and I agree: every corner has a new window shape. Bring a snack for the park across the way.
