Bánh Mì Phượng
📍 Da Nang, Hội An
The Hội An sandwich stand Anthony Bourdain crowned 'a symphony in a sandwich' — a wood-fired bánh mì institution with queues down Phan Châu Trinh street.
The world’s most famous bánh mì counter
Bánh Mì Phượng at 2B Phan Châu Trinh, on the edge of Hội An’s old town, was a beloved local bakery long before Anthony Bourdain stopped by in 2009 and declared its bánh mì “a symphony in a sandwich” on camera. The clip made it arguably the most famous bánh mì shop on earth, and the queue of pilgrims — locals and travelers alike — has been a fixture of the street ever since.
Why It’s Interesting
The sandwich earns the fame: bread baked continuously through the day so it’s always shatter-crisp, house pâté, barbecue pork, fresh herbs by the handful, and a secret sauce the family declines to discuss. The full “thập cẩm” (mixed) build is the benchmark order. Lines run 15–20 people deep from late morning, but they move quickly — the assembly line behind the counter is a spectacle in itself.
One honest note: in September 2023 the shop was suspended for three months after a food-poisoning incident affecting hundreds of customers. It reopened, and the crowds returned in force — but it’s part of the shop’s story and worth knowing.
Getting There
In Hội An’s old town, a short stroll from the Japanese Covered Bridge. Hội An is about 45 minutes by car from Đà Nẵng.

Field report
A traveler asked for good street food, and in Hội An every road — every single lantern-lit one — leads to this bakery counter on Phan Châu Trinh street. Anthony Bourdain filmed here in 2009, took a bite, and called it "a symphony in a sandwich." A town has never let anyone forget a compliment less.
The bread is the trick: crackly, light, baked constantly so the queue never catches up to a stale loaf. I watched the counter women build sandwiches faster than I can bury acorns — pâté, grilled pork, a full herb garden, that secret sauce — and I timed them. Under thirty seconds. I ordered the mixed one and needed both paws and a strategy.
Fair warning from your honest field squirrel: the shop was closed for three months in late 2023 after a food-safety incident, and reopened to the same long lines. The humans in today's queue clearly voted with their feet. Mine says: morning visit, extra herbs, eat it hot by the river.
